It will be multiple lines.

Such text files are pretty much unreadable in notepad, though they appear fine in wordpad. One solution is to do your editing with wordpad. Or you can create a cleaned up copy of the problem by running: perl cleanup.pl <original_file >new_copy where cleanup.pl looks like this: use warnings; binmode(STDIN);

Good, then Microsoft should be able to fix the bug easily by implementing the toggle programmatically. It should be in the next Windows update. Guess you missed the point that Notepad is not a WYSIWYG word processor. Have you seen Microsoft modify edlin.exe for the console-mode text editor in 15 years, or more?
